The Skeleton and Diseases

Questions:

1. What is the name of the disease the article is about?
2. List the symptoms.
3. If both parents are not carriers for this disease, is it possible that a child may still get it?  Why?
4. Why do you think some babies die right after or during birth?
5. You have a friend that continually comes to school with bruises and from time to time breaks a bone.  What would be your first guess as to why this happens?
6. How should your friend's doctor for question #5 explain in his/her letter that the bruises and bone fractures are caused by this disease?  Imagine that you are the doctor now and write out your statements.

1. The article is about the disease Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
2. The symptons are constipation, heavy sweating, loose joints, shorter in height than normal, bruise easily, weak muscles, problems with breathing, thin, smooth skin, hearing loss, and high-pitched voice.
3. Yes, because a gene may go through a mutation and form a new gene that may cause the disease.
4. Babies die right after or during birth due to lack of collagen which is essential for good bone strength.
5. The friend most likely has a lack of collagen.
6. The doctor should say that the patient has a lack of collagen due to the disease Osteogenesis Imperfecta and the patient needs to keep as much bone mass and muscle strength as possible because there is no cure.

1. This article was about the disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
2. The symptoms include constipation,loose joints, unormal short height, heavy sweating, easily bruised, week muscles, problems with breathing, thin, smooth skin, loss of hearing, and high voice.
